To protect the sensitive electronics of military vehicles from electromagnetic attacks, they must be partially or completely shielded. The materials used must meet different requirements, depending on which area is affected. For example, if high electrical conductivity is required and at the same time resistance to oil, lubricants and fuels, wires embedded in silicone and electrically conductive elastomers provide the optimum conditions. The particles or metal wires contained in the material ensure electrical conductivity. On the other hand, the base material consisting of fluorosilicone provides the necessary oil resistance.
Shielded windows are classically used in cockpits of aircraft. This offers several advantages: on the one hand, electromagnetic radiation is shielded, and on the other hand, frost can be defrosted by heating the window.
Spring contacts such as SMD contact pads and SMD contact springs are usually found in operating elements of displays and control units. The components are soldered directly on the printed circuit board and then establish a vibration-resistant electrical connection to the mating contact. Thanks to the selection of different surface coatings, these products can be optimally adapted to the properties of the environment and application.
In the sector of intelligence service, parts of vehicles are completely shielded to ensure the highest level of protection against eavesdropping. Walls, floors and ceilings are covered with conductive foam, conductive tapes or microwave absorbers, doors and entrance areas are also equipped with contact springs. As a result, the gaps between the individual elements are extremely reduced and electromagnetic radiation can penetrate these areas only with great difficulty.
